Carolina Herrera Opens in Bal Harbour

From the first email warning of high security and the RSVP list being closed prematurely, I knew the opening party for the Carolina Herrera boutique, would be fabulous. Oh, so very fabulous. The excruciatingly chic couturier herself, Carolina Herrera, would be there at Bal Harbour Shops — in flawless living color — for the launch of her eponymous boutique. A collective gasp was heard from Miami’s top socialistas after the invitations went out.

Known for her glamorous, sexy, yet carefully restrained designs, Herrera presents each new collection fresh enough to attract a younger crowd without alienating her loyal customers. Hosts Maria Celeste Arraras and Lourdes Fanjul helped celebrate, while guests previewed the Pre-Fall and Fall 2009 Collections, the Bridal Collection, as well as Judith Leiber, Nancy Gonzalez, Manolo Blahnik and Faraone Mennella accessories and sunglasses.

The 2000 square foot Bal Harbour boutique is the fourth free-standing store in the United States. The first opened in New York on Madison Avenue, followed by Los Angeles and Highland Park Village in Dallas, Texas. A fifth boutique is slated to open this month at the Mandarin Oriental at CityCenter in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Herrera twinkled among the socialites, chatting with everyone, though being practically mobbed like a rock star. This daunting queen of chic, seemingly haughty, is endearing, warm and mischievous. She possesses a sharp wit, which she uses frequently. Asked about how a woman should be fashionable yet age appropriate, Herrera replies, “Women must not wear things so tight, tight, tight. And please, no more silly, long, hair extensions on women over a certain age.” Touché. But, hey, she does practice what she preaches.
