Top Summer Tips to Keep You Looking & Feeling Good

Guest columnist, Dr. Julio Hernandez, founder of Biscayne Wellness Center (*formerly Biscayne Dental Group), on how to stay focused on health during those lazy days of summer!

“Summer is here! Many of us will take a vacation and this means spending time outdoors, travelling and generally stepping out of your routine.  Although the time off is great, we have to stay organized and not forget our healthy activities.  So here are some tips to keep your summer healthy.”

1.  Sunscreen: We are well aware that the UV radiation from the sun will cause skin damage and accelerated skin aging.  Be sure to look for a sunscreen that blocks UVA and UVB rays and is water-resistant.  Also, facial sunscreens are different from body sunscreens because the skin is different. Spend a few extra dollars on a good quality facial sunscreen that won’t leave you greasy or clog your pores.

2.  Exercise: If you are travelling or spending time with the kids, it’s easy to neglect your exercise routine.  Remember that no matter where you are, you can set aside 30 to 60 minutes to exercise.  Starting your day with a simple walk or jog will allow you to break a sweat, releasing toxins and stimulating hormones in your brain that will help you think more clearly and put you in a good mood.

3.  Rest: For those of you travelling to different time zones, the time change may throw off your body clock and you’ll suffer from “jet-lag”.  Pre-planning your travel will help adjust your internal clock properly. The week before your trip, start by adjusting your sleep schedule closer to what it will be in the time zone you are traveling to.  When you arrive at your destination, plan to watch the sun set on your first night there.  This will trick your brain into resetting your internal clock more quickly (and if you’re not alone, it’s pretty romantic too!).

Remember that pre-planning will save you a lot of time and frustration.  Set a schedule for yourself and make time for everything to keep you fit.  Plan your meals, your exercise and remember to take your supplements.  Most importantly, have fun.  Summer goes by quickly so make the most of your time off.
