Does Looking Good Make You Healthier?

Guest columnist, Dr. Julio Hernandez, founder of Biscayne Wellness Center, tells us how your outward appearance can impact your health:

“Aesthetic treatments are growing every year. More and more patients are coming in for Botox, fillers, liposuction and more. We all want to look good. With so many options out there and new ones coming up every day, there is something for everyone. These treatments are great and can certainly improve your looks but are they doing anything to improve your health? In some cases, the answer is yes. Sometimes directly and sometimes indirectly, aesthetic treatments can actually make us healthier.

“Studies show that if we look better, we tend to feel better too. Feeling better helps generate positive thoughts, in turn, these thoughts cause a physical release of “happy” hormones from our brain that will have a positive effect on the rest of the body.

“Let’s take it further. What if the root of where beauty lies is actually within us and not on the outside? Isn’t it true that we are all drawn to people who look happy, are physically fit, and beautiful? Is their beauty only on the outside, or is some of that beauty that we perceive actually internal?

“Unfortunately, medicine today is focused on treating problems after they arise. Integrative medicine takes healthcare one step further. We look at each patient individually to determine how their body functions. With this information, we can look at imbalances and deficiencies. Improving these areas will allow the body to function properly, improving skin, hair, energy and even memory.

“I guess the old saying “beauty is only skin deep” is not actually true. Inner and outer beauty is something we can all achieve with the proper guidance. For help in finding your inner beauty, contact us at Biscayne Wellness Center.
